Controlled Deployment of Multi-Panel Structures

Honeybee Robotics developed the preliminary design of a solar array deployment mechanism for Bigelow Aerospace’s Genesis I spacecraft which launched in 2006.

The pantographic mechanism deployed five solar panels from a stacked configuration to a flat configuration in a synchronized, controlled fashion using only one actuator.

  • Compact: The stowed 5-panel stack height was less than 8 inches and deployed to an array length of 115 inches.
  • Low Mass: The deployment mechanism hardware was to weigh less than 5 lbs.
  • Latching Design: The mechanism incorporated a latching feature to prevent closing once the solar array was deployed.
  • Versatile: Use for controlled deployment of solar arrays, radiators, sun shades, antennas and other structural appendages
