Dust Tolerant Connector

Honeybee’s Dust-Tolerant Connector (DTC) technologies enable reliable mechanical, electrical, and fluid connections through many mate/demate cycles in the presence of highly abrasive and adhesive lunar dust. The system also works in the harsh environment of space, where it provides reliable mate / demate electromechanical and fluid connections for manned space missions or on-orbit docking.

The system relies on a patented penetrable membrane to completely shield pins and sockets from dust, even when mating/demating in the field. This provides a scalable connection suitable for a wide range of interfaces, from small electrical connections up to tool changers for end-effectors with large loads and misalignments.

Honeybee developed this technology in our unique Dusty Environment Simulation Test (DUST) chamber, which enables us to test mechanisms at lunar temperature and pressure, in the presence of plasma-dried lunar soil simulant.

We have developed several variations of the Dust Tolerant Connector, including applications for the Lunar Surface Manipulation System
